What causes traumatic brain injury?

Traumatic brain injury generally describes a blow to the head, which has many causes, including auto accidents, sports injuries, falls, and physical assaults.

But, a traumatic brain injury can occur even if there’s no direct impact to your head. For example, a whiplash injury causes the sharp back-and-forth movement of the neck. This movement can, in turn, cause the brain to shake within the skull, leading to traumatic brain injury.

What are the symptoms of a traumatic brain injury?

Traumatic brain injury can cause a range of symptoms, such as:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty thinking clearly
  • Fatigue
  • Memory issues
  • Mood changes, like sudden sadness
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Light and sound sensitivity

These symptoms can make daily life difficult. You might not be able to work at your usual efficiency level and could experience problems at home and socially.

What is the treatment plan for a traumatic brain injury?

Traumatic brain injury treatment traditionally follows a similar path to whiplash treatment, typically including rest, physical therapy, and sometimes medication. While those measures can be quite helpful, new advances in the medical field provide amazing promise for traumatic brain injury patients.

At Infinite Health Integrative Medicine Center, Dr. Goolsby offers new precision medicine treatments that can help repair damaged brain tissue and improve overall brain function, such as:

Mesenchymal cell therapy

Mesenchymal cells occur in bone marrow, fatty tissue, amniotic tissue, and other places in the human body. The cells can differentiate (turn into) any kind of cell to complete tissue repair. The cells can also secrete growth factors that facilitate the most efficient tissue repair. This therapy can repair damaged parts of the brain, promote new cell growth, reduce inflammation, and improve neurological function.

PRP

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) uses plasma (the fluid part of the blood) and platelets, which have many restorative growth factors, to stimulate tissue regeneration. In addition, PRP messages your body’s native mesenchymal cells to come to the injured area.

Vesicle therapy

Vesicle therapy delivers tiny vesicles to an area of injury. They contain growth factors, proteins, and other molecules that encourage tissue remodeling while alleviating inflammation.

Mesenchymal cell therapy, PRP, and vesicle therapy have all shown tremendous promise for TBI patients during preclinical and clinical studies. They offer an exciting new alternative to more invasive treatments and opioids.
